How to measure the head size of children and adults?
Measuring head size can be done using a flexible measuring tape or a non-stretchable string and a ruler. The procedure for measuring head size is slightly different for children and adults, so let’s go through both processes.
Measuring Head Size in Children:
- Gather the necessary tools: You will need a flexible measuring tape or a non-stretchable string and a ruler.
- Position the child: Ensure the child is sitting or standing upright, with their head in a neutral position.
- Wrap the measuring tape or string: Place the measuring tape around the widest part of the child’s head, just above the eyebrows and ears, ensuring it is parallel to the ground. If you’re using a string, wrap it around the same area and mark the point of overlap.
- Measure the circumference: Read the measurement on the tape or measure the length of the string with a ruler. Make sure the measurement is snug but not too tight against the head.
- Record the measurement: Note down the measured head circumference in centimeters or inches, depending on your preference.
Measuring Head Size in Adults:

- Position the adult: Ensure the adult is sitting or standing upright, with their head in a neutral position.
